‘Ascending Cows’

“Inspired by principles of romanticism, the Ascending Cow series is emotionally driven with an emphasis on wild nature. Domestication, strength and stability have been associated with cows in the past as well as worship and sacrifice. The journey of the cow through these paintings can be seen as embodying folklore like mysticism. The cow is achieving a justice and freedom long worked for and righteously due. I've witnessed viewers interpret the transcendental journey of the cow as both sad and happy. I approach these paintings with lightheartedness, charm, and joy, but that does not necessarily define the series. I feel it is my job as an artist to present the stage for the drama to play out but not to define the symbolism. The reasons might still be unknown but we can safely say the cows are finally coming home.” - Blake Whitaker
